Went there mainly as stopping point to visit Kiso-Valley the next day.
stayed at: Chisun Grand Nagano
Rooms were big, but seemed very old-fashioned in it's Style of Furniture. Rooms as always during our visits: very clean. Hotel Staff helped us with transfering our luggage to our next Hotel in Kyoto. Hotel also has a "smart select" system were you would select as much towels, slippers, bathrobes etc. as you need, which is way more economic (since we only stayed 1 night, we would not need as much). Since it was also very cheap i would very much recommend it.
Restaurants
Toritetsu - Yakitori restaurant, very good!
Cafe Shinka - to be honest, can't remember very much, but was good i think.
Sights
Susobanakyo Hot Spring Uroikan - Onsen with natural Hot Spring. Went there in the evening on foot from our Hotel. It seemed like our group were the only tourists there but since we already read up on the customs we were not surprised. The instructions were written in japanese and english with helpful images. The Onsen itself was great with an outdoors area. The price felt cheap, but i do not have other Onsen prices for comparison. We went there on a friday evening and there were some other people but it did not seem to busy. Would recommend!
Kiso-Valley & Magome
Traveling to and through Kiso Valley was a great experience. You get to see the landscape and smaller villages way better in the local trains and the buses. We spent a few hours in Magome, a small village that looks like is was stuck in time for a few hundred years. It is more or less one road with many buildings still having shops with traditional japanese cultural goods and also gift shop merchandise.
