Here you will take an air conditioned bus to the hotel where you have a free day to get settled and explore the area around the hotel before a welcome dinner with your group and tour director. Day 3: On this morning, a local guide introduces you to the highlights of this bustling ancient capital, home to the world’s first democracy.
- Stop by the Olympic Stadium, Syntagma Square, and the Arch of Hadrian
- View the sixth-century Temple of Zeus
- See the classically inspired Old Royal Palace, home of the Hellenic Parliament, and drive through the Plaka district
- Set off on a walking tour around the ancient Acropolis, site of the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion (the Acropolis and Parthenon are amazing to see, just know that it will be in the open sun with a lot of people, so wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen)
After your tour in the morning, you will have time to enjoy a free afternoon in Athens unless you add an optional tour. We did not add a tour, and spent the afternoon wandering around the shopping district of Plaka and Monastiraki. Here you will find endless shopping and restaurants both authentic dining and some chain restaurants (there is a Hard Rock Cafe).
Day 4: Today is a free day in Athens on the tour, however there is an optional tour to the ancient city of Delphi, with a stop in the infamous hillside town of Arachova (Google the myth of Arachne and Athena). This optional tour is highly recommended and you will so disappointed if you miss visiting Delphi. In Delphi, you will journey to the slopes of Mount Parnassus and the archeological site of Delphi, home of the mystical oracle. Embark on a guided tour featuring the Temple of Apollo, where, according to legend, the god Apollo once communicated with mortals. Greece’s ancient military leaders customarily left gifts here in hopes of good fortune in battle. Then, take time to explore the ancient treasures, including a huge bronze charioteer, on display at the Delphi Museum. Continue on to the picturesque town of Arachova and enjoy a traditional Greek lunch at a local restaurant.
Day 5: Ferry to the island of Mykonos.
