Spent the last few days in Tokyo again, this time staying in Akasaka region and exploring areas we hadn't visited yet.
Also took a short trip to Kamakura, which is right by the sea (Sagami Bay), the first place were we saw a lot of dogs taking a walk along the beach. Every one of them dressed in clothes.
There we also saw a lot of typhoon warnings and a place were you could buy some food which attracts an army of pigeons and they land on your arms, your neck, your head and try to eat the food. That was fun, when the food was finally eaten (that didn't take a long time), one of the pigeons couldn't figure it out that nothing is left, he stayed on the arm and so we walked back to the city with a pigeon. He looked very confused when he finally decided to fly away.
We also took a trip to a zoo (not the one inside Tokyo center, but the one far away on the outskirts of the city), but honestly it was depressing - animals were kept in small cages, they were rattling from stress and boredom, most of them had fallen out hair due to stress. The only positive place was the gorilla and orangutan enclosure, we could see them really up close and from the looks of it, they had a vast area they could explore outside the cages.
I don't recommend staying at capsule hotels, they might look cute and comfy from the pictures, but they are unbearable to sleep at. We stayed only 1 night, just to have the experience and it was the worst sleep I have ever had, I think I slept better in the overnight bus than the capsule hotel. Several reasons - there is absolutely zero sound isolation, you can hear EVERYTHING that your neighbours are doing, everyone is snoring and making noises. When you close the door/curtain or whatever it's called from inside your capsule, then you will slowly start to suffocate, because there is no air ventilation, and you can't leave the door half-way open, it's either fully open where everyone can see you, or fully closed without any air. So it was very hot, sweaty and noisy. Also you have to leave your luggage in an open space, so potentially it can get stolen, everybody has access to it. If you wan't to try it out, then do it only for 1 night, don't stay any longer, it will ruin your sleep and your vacation. The amount of money you save by staying in capsule hotels isn't that much anyway.
We spent a lot of time exploring the other areas we hadn't been yet to (check the google maps link), Shinjuku, Shibuya, a lot of cafes and shops. Also try the conveyor belt sushi, it's a great experience.
Renting the pocket wifi was one of the best decisions we made, having access to internet, google maps and translation apps was super useful, our trip would have been much more frustrating without it. Use the google maps for travelling within Tokyo, it will show you the best metro connections and also how to get there.
Don't use the bus within Tokyo, we had a lot of problems finding the correct bus stops (there are too many of them and they are marked only in Japanese and google maps shows the wrong spots), in many cases we missed our bus and had to wait in a queue for like an hour or so. Subway is so much faster, more reliable and best of all - easier to find, we never ever had any issues with the metro.
We especially liked how clean everything was, they cleaned the metro several times per day, it looked like it had just arrived from the factory.

Pocket wifi must be returned in the envelope they had given us at the beginning of the trip. Put it inside, seal the envelope and drop it at any post office box, the address is written there and postage is paid for. Do NOT go through airport security without having dropped off the pocket wifi, there is no post office after the security. |
