Initially we planned for going to Kanazawa and only then to Matsumoto, but while we were in Takayama, we decided that it would take too much time and we would be very tired, so we cancelled the hotel in Kanazawa and extended our stay in Matsumoto.
In hindsight, 3 days in Matsumoto is too much. Yes, we already were very tired from our previous trips in Takayama, so we needed some time to just sit and relax, so we actually spent a lot of time in the hotel room itself. We won't for a couple of walks to the castle, which is the main point of interest here, then we went to a couple of cafes/restaurants.
We also took a daytrip to Daio Wasabi farm, where we rented electrical bicycles again and enjoyed the ride to the farm and also the farm itself. There you could buy everything made from wasabi, even icecream, which tastes a bit like cucumbers mixed with sour cream.
I think 2 days is plenty enough time in Matsumoto, but 3 is too much.
Also when you plan your train routes between cities, do NOT use google maps, it will give you poor connections between trains and more expensive options. It is best to use Hyperdia in Japan, there you can select if you do have or don't have a JR Pass, based on that it will plan the best route for you. We usually checked the initial route on google maps, just to understand the direction and time it will take, but the actual train rides we planned through Hyperdia.

In the morning we arrive in Matsumoto, check in and go exploring. |
Travel to Matsumoto from Takayama, there is a local bus, which is quite fast. If you travel this way, don't take any trains, that will be slower. The bus will take you through the moutains. |
