Day 1: We woke up and had breakfast at our guest house, then headed to the Akureyri Botanical Gardens to explore. We also walked through the town of Akureyri, going into some shops and admiring the buildings. Then we headed towards Lake Myvatn. On the way, we stopped at the magnificent Godafoss waterfall ("waterfall of the Gods"). When we arrived in the Lake Myvatn area, we explored the pseudo-craters at Skutustadir. We had lunch at Vogafjos restaurant, where we enjoyed geysir rye bread (baked in the ground in geothermal heat) and hearty burgers. Next, we explored Grjotagja, a small lava cave where scenes of Game of Thrones were filmed. Then we drove to the sulphurous hot springs of Namaskard and then the Krafla area, where Viti Crater is located. We walked to the Leirhnjukur area, where volcanic eruptions took place from 1975-1984. This was really amazing terrain to explore- very unique. Our overnight this night was a little guesthouse on a small farm in the Lake Myvatn area. We enjoyed a delicious dinner with authentic Icelandic cuisine, including Skyr with fruit for dessert.
Day 2: We woke up and drove to see the Namafjall geothermal area, with its bubbling pools of mud and steamy sulfuric gas. This looked like an alien landscape! Then we drove to the famous Dettifoss waterfall, Iceland's most powerful waterfall. After this, we continued on to the Hofn area (on some rather rough roads!), where we would spend the night.
Great recommendations! Seeing hot springs and waterfalls in one trip is very cool.
