Day 1:
I arrived in the Marseille Provence Airport pretty late so I took a taxi to the air-bnb room I booked the week before. The room was ok for $40,also it was situated on the Rue de la République.
The next morning I woke up and I had a breakfast at the nearby Babel Community Marseille. It's a pretty nice place with a good-looking decor. The food was alright as well as the coffee. After I was full,I rented an electric scooter to get to the places I wanted to visit in the city easier.I started out at the famed Cathédrale La Major. It's a massive roman catholic cathedral and a National Monument of France. It has a very exotic feel to it,partly due to the architectural style that has an oriental feel to it.It also sits in front of the harbour and the sea,so the view is great.
From there,I headed over to the MuCEM-a museum dedicated to the civilizations of Europe and the Mediterrenean. The building is very impressive and the exterior as well. The entrance fee was about $20 and the exhibits hold a large collection of artefacts related to the mediterranean culture. It gives an interesting insight on how the region has developed over time and much more.I definitely recommend visiting the museum if you're in the region.I ate at the La Vieille Pelle restaurant and then I went to visit the Museum of the Roman Docks.Marseille has been a very important city-port on the Mediterranean Sea since it became a greek colony 2600 years ago under the name of Massilia.Eventually it was conquered by the romans, who held it for centuries. The building that hosts the museum used to be a roman warehouse, and the entrance is free. The collection is small but pretty interesting.Unfortunately, all the information was in french,so I couldn't understand very well.
In the evening I went on a walk around the Old Port, before having dinner at a cafe close to it and going to get a good night's sleep back at the apartment room.
Day 2:
In the second day I had breakfast at a pastry down the street, and then I headed over to the Marseille History Museum. The entrance fee was about $1.50 and it was well worth it.The exhibits are well-organized.The history of Marseille is truly fascinating and the museum covers it all, starting from the ancient ages up to the modern day period. The collection of the museum is pretty large, featuring various items such as pottery and boat parts from the ancient ages .
After visiting the museum,I took the bus to the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde cathedral. The building is situated on a hill and it offers a very nice view of the city and the sea.The frescoes are also very detailed, and the cathedral gives the same exotic feel as the other one.In the evening I walked around the Old Port once again, and then I headed over to a bar to have a pint before going to sleep.
Day 3:
In the third day I took the bus to Cannes. The ride was 2.30hr long and it costed about $13.Cannes is an expensive resort so I cooked food that monrning in the airbnb apartment to lower the costs.
In Cannes I took a taxi to get near the Le Suquet neighbourhood, where I climbed to the top of the Old Town to get to the Église Notre-Dame-d’Espérance church. It's a very scenic place where I got a nice view over the town and the bay of Cannes.I spent some time there before going downhill through the Rue Meynadier street.I had a traditional Provençal meal, which was very tasty and I could tell that it was cheaper than the top restaurants nearby that are only open during the evening.
I spent some more time chilling around, and then I headed over the La Croisette Promenade, where I walked along the beautiful shores of the sea before going to sleep. The cheapest room I could find was $50 a night.
Day 4:
In the fourth day I took a bus to Nice. The ride was 40-minutes long and costed $10.In Nice I checked-in at the Antares Hostel,a great place near the train station where I slept during my stay in Nice for $20 a night.
When I arrived I took the bus to the Old Town, where I had lunch and a coffee.I wandered through the narrow cobblestone streets and the colorful buildings. The Place Massena square nearby is also very impressing with historical buildings.
In the evening I ate at a Cuisine Nissarde-labeled restaurant,to try some of the local dishes, and then I went for a walk around the Promenade des Anglais to glance at the beautiful streets of Nice and the scenic waters.
Day 5:
In the fifth day I took a taxi ride to the Matisse Musuem. The entrance fee was $12 and it's a very informative place with beautiful paintings and other works of Henri Matisse.I learned a lot about his life and I paid a little extra for a very knowledgeable guide that explained to me what his paintings meant.
After the museum,I took a taxi back to the Old Town, where I climbed on top of a hill to get to the Castle of Nice.Unfortunately, not much of the castle is left, but the view is amazing and the climb is not that big.In the evening,I went to a restaurant nearby,to have dinner before going to sleep.
