Lake Tekapo may very well be my favourite place in the entire country. After missing it the first two times I visited NZ, I finally got it and it was everything I dreamed of.
Activities:
Stargazing - Tekapo is one of the world’s few Dark Sky Reserves. This has been the one thing I really wanted to do my past two trips but it just didn’t work out. This time it did, and the night was 90% clear! I did the Summit Experience with the Dark Sky Project and I’ve never seen anything like it.
Tekapo Springs - A large public spa facility on the shores of the lake. Pools are regulated at different temperatures.
Church of the Good Shepherd - Stone church on the lakeshore, beautiful backdrop. I was there just past lupin season, go in November or December to see those as well.
Solar System Walk - Dark Sky Project set up different plaques about the planets, sans Uranus as that one got relocated due to construction. Cross a suspension bridge to access the Church.
Lake Pukaki - Electric blue lake on the road to Mt. Cook/Lake Tekapo.
Lodging:
Lakefront Lodge (Lake Tekapo) - Stayed in a glamping tent under the stars. So serene.
YHA (Lake Tekapo) - Modern hostel on the shore. Beds are very comfortable. Be warned, the WiFi is horrible. You don’t exactly go to Lake Tekapo to use WiFi, but sometimes you may need it.
Eateries:
Just the Four Square, Tekapo is in the middle of nowhere!
