I actually went to Wanaka twice: Wanaka-Queenstown-Lake Tekapo-Christchurch-Wanaka (flew to Queenstown)-Auckland (flew from Queenstown). Just the way it worked this time.
Activities:
#ThatWanakaTree - Iconic tree near the shores of Lake Wanaka; it actually grows beneath the lake and up.
Puzzling World - Museum with a complex maze and illusions.
Lake Hawea - Short drive, amazing scenic viewpoints.
Lodging:
Mountain View Backpackers (Wanaka) - Small, adventure oriented hostel on the outskirts of Wanaka.
The Moorings (Wanaka) - Higher end motel/apartment set-up. Parents paid for a few nights of this; a great deal for what you pay, albeit on the expensive side. They have a kitty cat named Claude, he’s a good boy.
Eateries:
Wanaka Gourmet Kitchen - Once again on the higher end which is unlike my style, but I wanted to try some top-notch lamb while there. If you feel like treating yourself, this is a good place to do so.
Big Fig - Affordable fast-casual restaurant not far from Lake Wanaka. Pick and choose from several main courses and sides.
Jones Family Fruit Stall - Some of the best fruit I’ve ever had, specifically their peaches and plums. It’s near Cromwell which is halfway between Queenstown and Wanaka on one of two routes. (The second route goes through the Cardrona Pass)
