I arrived at Asahikawa by bus after my stay in Sounkyo.
I stayed in a nice guest house called "Mimatsuso Ryokan" which had a very nice old school traditional Japanese rooms for its guest, and some snacks/tea with breakfast served as well.
I didn't found this city to be particularly interesting, and many people use it as a gateway into the "Daisetsuzan National Park" so I had it basically the other way around. I choose to stay here because of the long traveling time between destinations (because of the bus rides that you need to use while traveling in Hokkaido) but in hindsight I'd say this place is entirely skippable if you don't mind stretching your rides a bit more.
My next destination was Noboribetsu, which I arrived got to by a train (finally!)
Fascinating and helpful reading about these towns and destinations in Japan, places I would not have known about reading where to go.
