Arrival
You may be noticing a theme, but be prepared for a bit of trek to whatever lodging you'll be staying at. The area near the palace is a mazework of alleyways and narrow streets, and the few bridges that cross the lake are rather small.
Day 1: Machhala Hill and Jain Temple
My recommendation for the first day is to either take the short hike (1-2hrs) up the hill, or if you prefer, the cable car. On clear days, you should get a view of the entire city and Lake Pichola, and even if you don't, you should at least see some local monkeys observing the cable cars (like a strange reverse zoo). The views from the hill should help to orient you on further days, as the city can be confusing to navigate.
On your way down, if you have the budget, it is worth taking aboat ride in the lake, particularly around sunset. If budget is of no concern at all, you may want to check out Jagmandir, the palace on the lake. the palace is a working hotel, so most of it is not accessible, but I have been told you can dine at the restuarant even if you are not guest (I did not try this).
Day 2: City Palace to Ambrai Ghat (and Shilpgram)
Like in other Rajasthani cities, Udaipur features an impressive palace. Once gain, the audio-guide is highly recommendedas there are minimal explanations. After visiting the palace, the nearby Jain Temple is also owrth a visit. Thereafter, it is worth following the mazelike streets along the waterfront to Ambrai Ghat. "ghat" literally means "water access" or "water steps," and while I don't recommend going for a swim, the promenade gives some of the best shoreline views.
I happened to be in Udaipur in late December, which coincided with the Shilpram festival. Shiplgram is an artist commune on the other side of Fateh Sagar lake, and the festival sees dozens of artisan and food stalls in a market setting, as well as numerous live peformances in the outdoor amphitheatre.
Departure
As noted in the arrival section, Udaipur is a well developed city with numerous wasy to get into or out of town. I took the train out of the city train station (UDZ). Note that there two train stations near each other, so be sure you go the correct one.
