After my Uber, I then walked over to the Bob Marley House Shereif Hostel, and stayed for a few days while seeing the East and West Bank. For the East Bank, you can simply walk from the hostel and see Karnak and the Luxor Temple (plus the museums). For the West Bank, the cheapest and best way is to walk to the Ferry station, talk to them and book a ferry (offered every ~30 minutes) to the West side, and then simply ask around for a bicycle rental. I found one that was ~<10 USD for the day (had to give my US drivers license as collateral), and then using my offline maps simply biked around to the various different temples I wanted to see. Be sure to bring water with you! This is a much cheaper (and better) method than hiring a car/guide for the day. After you return your bike, it's the same deal with a ferry ride back that is every ~30 minutes. The ferry costs under 2 USD round trip.
I spoke with the hostel owner (he is quite possibly the nicest person I have ever met), and he told me the overnight train time (under 15 USD) from Luxor to Cairo. It's offered once or twice a evening I believe but I do not recall the time...I simply just left the hostel to walk to the train station, got there a bit early and bought my ticket.
I had already been to Egypt but otherwise, would have taken the multiple trains offered daily to go south to Aswan. If you want to take day trips to Abydos/Dendera/Kom Ombo/Edfu, unfortunately it seems like the only real way to do so is to hire a car for the day which is a bit more expensive, so it's best to do that with other travellers to keep the cost low. Aswan does not really have a hostel scene to my knowledge but from others I heard you can use Booking.com to find cheap accomodation. There are tourist busses that run daily so that is a cheap way to see Abu Simbel, but otherwise it's the same as the Luxor daytrips where you'll probably need a rental car to see Philae and the Monastery. There are <1 USD ferry rides to the west bank where you can see the tombs of the nobles in Aswan and also Elephantine Island so it is possible to see a number of the sites on a budget.
