BRISBANE!
Quaint little city this one is, compared to the rest of Australia. Brisbane is the smaller of the core cities but that doesn't mean it's not a firecracker of a place. Let's check it out!
WORKABILITY!
Chances are if you've come to Australia long-term you are probably on a work visa of some sort. Brisbane has something for everyone is a good place to start your long term journey from. Brisbane has a booming workforce with just about every type of job you can think of readily availbe in the city core. It was pretty easy to line up my first job in Australia here.
TRANSPORTATION!
One of the first things I noticed about Brisbane is how easy it was to get around. Buses and trains flow pretty much everywhere, and there are Citibikes, a bike rental program that's actually quite cheap and accsessible the same way a bus or train is - with your reloadable GoCard! I think this system is really effective and more cities should jump on it around the world. Brilliantly laid out, there are bike stops everywhere, wether you're just going around the block or in it for a long haul, there will be something there.
BEAUTIFUL PARKS!
One thing not to be missed in Brisbane are it's beautiful parks. Unfortunately Brisbane doesn't have as many beaches (however Gold Coast just to the south has TONS) so you'll be skipping the sand on this one. Brisbane Botanical Gardens are nothing short of spectacular hosting plants from around the world and of course Australian local ones as well. At night there are animals running about everywhere in a true australian fashion. Nothing to be scared over though. The parks are well lit and perfect for that evening walk.
ART GALLERY OF QUEENSLAND!
What a beautiful art gallery. Hosting some of the finest pieces of art Queensland has to offer. There are alot of indigineous pieces here that are truly a treat to the eye. I spent a few hours here one afternoon getting absolutley lost in some of the pieces here. The gallery itself has multiple floors all dedicated to various parts of Queensland and you can tell how each area has had its own influence. Admission is also free which is a huge bonus!
RESTAURANTS!
As with any great city restaurants are everywhere and Brisbane is no exception. However some of them are hidden from plain site and require a bit of exploring to get to. I remember there was a restaurant hidden off the main strip down a back alley called "Captain Planets". I remember the cartoon character and thought it was awesome so I took a look. Wow. I was blown away with the quality of food. I was fortunate enough to come here for brunch on a sunday and eggs benedict was calling my name! I remember it was mexican style with a BURNT CORN HOLLANDIASE! If you've ever heard of such a thing. It was amazing. Highly reccommend this spot and the ones surrounding it.
Brisbane is a melting pot of culture and a truly well balanced city. It was nice spending time here and getting work lined up out-of-city but my time there was defintley well spent!
