Just like Alibaug, Daman is a perfect weekend getaway for the people of Mumbai and part of South Gujarat to escape from the and bustle of their mundane routine. It is located at around 170 kms from Mumbai and is a very popular weekend getaway destination with beautiful beaches, bustling hotels and great food. Daman was a Portuguese settlement and became a part of India much later after India's independence. The culture, history and flavor of Daman still has a Portuguese feel. Daman has two main parts: Nani Daman and Moti Daman. The attractions are spread over these parts. Nani Daman and Moti Daman are connected by road and ferry services.
Day 1
We had reached our hotel at Daman the evening earlier.
We started our day with a visit to Devka Beach. It is a favorite amongst the visitors for the beach shacks lined up on its coast and several beach-facing hotels/resorts situated near its coastline.
After spending around an hour at the beach, we went to The Fort of Saint Jerome/Nani Daman Fort. It is a majestic Fort at the shore of Daman Ganga river. When you behold the sight of the fort’s surrounding area from the top of the walls, you can spot Chhapli Sheri beach located at the north side of the fort and lighthouse beach and “Ram Setu” towards the south.
Next was The Church of Our Lady of the Sea. The Church is enclosed in the fort of Saint Jerome. It is an extension of an ancient chapel, which was constructed in the year 1627. Do visit this place before 6 PM in the evening.
We then reached the Moti Daman Fort. The construction of the imposing Moti Daman Fort dates back to the 16th century when the territory was a Portuguese enclave. You are greeted by the Cathedral of Bom Jesus as you enter the Moti Daman Fort and walk a few steps ahead from the entrance.
We ended the day with some local shopping & good local food.
Day 2
We started the day with a visit to the Lighthouse Beach at Moti Daman. You will notice the people jogging, taking a brisk walk, socializing, conducting photo shoots, etc.
Just at a 15-min walk from the Lighthouse Beach, there is the Church of Our Lady of Remedios. It was constructed as a chapel in 1607.
Next in the list was the Devka Beach. The black sands of Devka Beach serves as a recreational hub for tourists and locals, who come here to play volleyball and swim.
Lastly was the Jampore Beach. This is probably the most popular beach of Daman. The beach is known for shacks, a small open-air gym, water sports activities, etc. One can’t help but admire its clean golden sand and the casuarina trees spread along its coastline. The shacks offer snacks and food to suit your taste. You can spend an entire afternoon on the beach trying out the various activities at your disposal. Relaxing on the beach while admiring the sunset is the aptest way to end your weekend trip.
