I am from Bangladesh, a country in South Asia. I have been living in the USA for last 5 years. I always craved for Bangladeshi food. Unfortunately the city I live does not have bangladesi store or restaurent. One of my friends was doing phd in detroit, MI back in 2018. So I visited to just taste bangladeshi cuisine. But I also could not stop my self visiting famous tourist spots there.
Day 1 : I arrived in the detroit international airport. My friend picked me up. But you will get uber/lyft available any time. This is a big airport. At night, I stayed at my friends place. So I really dont have any idea about lodging. Next morning, We went to Hamtramck which is called hidden gem of Detroit. I am fan of polish art. So we went to polish art centre. You will find anything from books and music to stonewear, classic cut crystal, folk art and fine foods.
Then I visited the Bangladeshi stores which I liked very much.. ha ha ha. We went to "Niaz Bangla Bazaar", bangla spices , Bengal american store. I picked up pickels, my all time favorite "Bombay sweets potato crackers", green mangoes, "kasundi", "Hilsa fish". It was a delight to pick all those foods. Then we went to a bangladeshi sweet restaurent. You will find plenty of them with benglai names. I ate "rosugulla" " kalojam". These are true gems. If you are a bangladeshi and craves for deshi food, then hamtramck is a must place to visit.
Day 2 : My friend suggested to visit MAcinac island. So we went there by car. Mackinac Island sits in Lake Huron, between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. There is no direct connection from Detroit to Mackinac Island. You have to take ferry to reach there. The cost of ferry for a round trip is around 30 bucks. Since no cars are allowed on Mackinac Island, one of the most scenic ways to take in the natural beauty is by bicycle. You’re always welcome to take your own bikes to Mackinac Island on the ferry. But there also are several places to rent bikes – from single-speed cruisers to tandem bikes to tag-along trailers for little kids. One of the iconic Mackinac Island experiences is to pedal all the way around the outer rim of the Island with the lake breeze in your face. It’s a leisurely 8.2-mile ride that takes 60 to 90 minutes. The hourly rate for bike rental was around 13 dollars. It was a delight to spend the full day over there
Yes there is, try Bangladeshi desserts
Oooh I didn't know there was such great food options in Detroit!
