Another PA 3 day weekend to get away from the stresses of work!
This time we're headed to Chambersburg, PA. I chose Chambersburg because there is a Best Western there with a big whirlpool tub in the room. Sounds cheesy, but after a long day of hiking, who doesn't want to relax in a huge bubble bath?
Chambersburg is also known for its peaches, so check the calendar and see if you can hit up some farm stands on the side of the road or be lucky enough to see a festival! Either way, eat some peaches, you won't regret it.
Chambersburg isn't far from Michaux State Forest and Pine Grove State Forest.
Poole Steeple is a tough at times but fun hike that feels like it is straight up hill. But trust me, the payoffs are amazing and completely worth it! You can opt for the strenuous or not so strenuous trails about halfway up the hill.
It was pretty windy up at the top when I went in November, so make sure you bring some warm clothes. I did see a bunch of people in hammocks just enjoying the view and presumably, the sunset!
After Poole Steeple, head across the road on the other side of the small lake. You'll have some time to eat lunch or dinner, relax, and watch the water. Do you fish? This is a good place to take out your fishing poles!
At night? Take your pick of local Mexican restaurants. There are three or four in Chambersburg. I'm a fan of tortas (sandwiches), personally, especially after working hard all day. It's a nice treat to eat a big tasty sandwich for dinner!

The next day you might be up for some longer hikes. Sunset Rocks is also in the Pine Grove Furnace. You can cut a mile or two off by driving down the rocky dirt road on the other side of the street from the visitor's center. There is very limited parking and depending on the time of year you might have some troubles getting there. If you cut these miles off, you'll hike about 5 miles. I went clockwise on the trail and did the tough uphill part first. I think that was best because I did it while I was strongest and with the most energy! Bring some snacks for the summit because it's beautiful and you'll want to stay there for a while. Part of this trail also crosses with the Appalachian Trail, which is pretty cool.
Another night spent in the nice hotel whirlpool tub to sooth your muscles after a long day of hiking.
I opted for some Korean Food for dinner from The Korean Bulgogi House. I got the Bulgogi Bibimbap. It was so tasty.
Still have some time? We were driving from Pittsburgh, so on our way back we stopped at the Shawnee State park for a mostly flat trail loop around the lake. Another beautiful day. There are some seasonal ice cream parlors open nearby!
