If you are in Houston or New Orleans, visiting the cajun country in the united states is worth visiting. Lafayette, Louisiana is considered to be the center of Cajun culture in the state. Lafayette is 3.5 hours drive from Houston and a 3-hour drive from New Orleans
Transportation: You can come by car here. Bus service is worst. You must rent a car.
Lodging: Airbnbs/hotels are available near the airport or downtown.
Activities : We visit 2 spots , one is vermillion village and another one is Acadian village.
Vermillion village : only 15 minutes drive from the downtown Lafayette. This is a live history museum to represent the Acadian, Creole and Native American cultures in the Attakapas region from the time period 1765-1890.
- So why it is live museum ? Because when you entered this village, you will find people wearing attire and doing chores exactly like 17th century Acadian/Creaole people.
- Admission Fee : Around $11 bucks, Admission time : 10 AM to 4 PM, but they stop admission after 3 PM
- Seven restored original homes
- Artisans provide demonstrations on craft performed by the early settlers
- We also took a dance class ( how to dance like acadians ) It was so much fun
- Boat Tour : Boat tour is available but you have to book earlier
Acadian village : only 25 minutes drive from the downtown Lafayette. You will get an idea how early acadian settlers live.

- You can enjoy their living style, home goods, utensils. You will feel like you are in 17th century. I will say a must visit place
Food : As we planned to explore the cajun cultures, we choose a authentic cajun restaurant. We went to Bon Tempes grill restaurant. We took gumbo (authentic cajun dish) and 12-napkin roast beef po boy. The price is around $$.
