Munich Overview
- If you just want to explore a fun city, visit Munich. If you love history, visit Munich. If you just want good beer and food, visit Munich. Love, love, love this city. Take advantage of the history of the city and watch some documentaries/youtube clips on the history to refresh how important this city is. Also, take historical walking tours.
Hotel Recommendation: Hotel Amba, it is right next to the train station which is great after a long day of travel. The location is perfect as it is about a 10-15 min walk to the city center.
Food Recommendation: Vituals Market (so much good street food) – get the pork belly sandwiches.
Bratwurstherzl – get the Nuremberg sausages and potato salad
Drink Recommendation: Schneider Brauhaus, Hofbrahaus (ok you have to go), Augstiner
Things to Do: Weihenstephaner (in Freising)—oldest brewery, Dachau, history walking tours, museums galore
Day 1: We arrived in Munich from Prague and headed to Marienplatz to the Schneider Brauhaus for some good beers. We walked around Marienplatz and the underground mall system.
Day 2: We visited the Deutsches Museum (Science and Industry) and spent a few hours there. We headed to Freising today in an attempt to go to Weihenstephaner Brewery (the oldest brewery in the world), but alas it was closed. So we explored the town and ate dinner at Weibrau Huber. Dinner was excellent! We spent the rest of the evening in Freising and explored.
Day 3: We went on a free walking tour of Munich where we explored all of the historical centers pivotal during WWII and the royal history of the city. After the tour we visited the market, went to Bratwurstherzl and then to the Hofbrauhaus. We did some more sight seeing.
Day 4: We headed to Dachau today and took a guided tour. I recommend having an official tour. It was an extremely moving experience. We spent the first half of the day here, and the we headed back to Freising. We finally made it to Weihenstephaner brewery and tasted a lot of their beers and ate their delicious food. We headed back into Munich, said our final goodbyes to the Marienplatz and our European vacation.
