Introduction
I traveled to Estonia by ferry with my mom for a 4-day holiday during her holiday in August. Before this trip, I already went to Estonia 2 weeks before, and I also visited Riga in Latvia for the first time. However, in this Itinerary, I will tell you about my trip with mom. This is not a typical backpacker trip (mom would never accept to that, haha), so it was more on the expensive side.
As I am from Finland, It is very easy and cheap to travel to Estonia, especially if you are going to stay overnight at the ferry. Of course, it also depends on which company you will use. I used my favorite, Silja Line. It is slightly more expensive (and comfortable) than Eckeröline. An overnight trip can be as cheap as 17 euros on the ferry. However, we only stayed on the ferry for 2 hours and went directly to Tallin OldTown, which was around 30-50 euros for a person. We took an overpriced scam taxi from the harbor (almost 20 euros!! normal price is 10 euros).
Day 1
After we arrived at our hotel (My City Hotel, 4 stars), we headed directly to the closest Georgian restaurant. I was craving some Georgian food and it was also the first time for my mom. We had some beef and chicken stew and lovely Georgian salad. After this, we went back to our hotel to sleep because it was already around 10 PM.
Day 2
On Day 2, we went to explore the Old Town of Tallinn. We visited one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, Raeapteek. Medicine here is a little bit cheaper than in Finland. After this, we went to Toompea, a famous viewpoint in Tallinn, which can be slightly hard to find. We found the famous towers in Tallinn, also called as Danish King's Garden. These towers reminded me of the series ''Game Of Thrones''. It was super fascinating especially because I am a huge fan of this series. After taking a million photos, we went to a restaurant nearby - Restaurant Monk. There my mom had some Russian food and I had moose or elk sausage.
Day 3
On our third day, we went to St. Catherine's Passage. This was a highlight of the trip for me! Just like the Danish King's Garden, it is also reminded of Game of Thrones. Near to the Passages, we found a cozy cafe where we had our lunch. My mom had lamb dumplings and I had Borcht. We visited the same cafe 2 times in a day.
Day 4
On our fourth day, we visited Tallinn's Zoo. The Zoo is really big and has all kinds of animals, not just rabbits, and ducks. Sadly, we did not see rhinos, elephants nor ice bears. But we saw lions, monkeys, and a leopard! This was another highlight of the trip and my mom enjoyed it too, especially when it was her first time seeing exotic animals.
Tips for your trip to Estonia:
- Transportation: Download pilet.ee and buy your ticket from the app. Very easy & cheap. Cash was not accepted due to COVID-19. Be careful with taxis, especially if you come from the harbor. Ask your hotel to get you a taxi. Also, walking is a great option, since everything is nearby.
- Food: Eating is not so cheap here. If you're on a tight budget, you should eat at Reval Cafe. They have cheap and delicious food for under 10 dollars. Pizza Grande is a cheap place to go if you are craving for some fast food.
- Best views: St.Catherine's Passage, Toompea & Danish King's Garden.
