Here's how I spent a weekend (and a half) in Milwaukee while on a work trip. This covers just the highlights of Milwaukee in Autumn 2019.
Day 1: Walking tour
I started off the weekend by heading to the Milwaukee Public Market. It was a small (indoor) market selling so many different types of cheeses that Wisconcin is famous for, fresh produce, and had a number of small eateries. I had some Poutine for breakfast at one of them.
Next was a walk through the historic third ward area just appreciating the neighborhood and from there I walked all the way to the Milwaukee Art Museum.
The art museum's outer structure has these wing like projections that open up at certain times of the day- unfortunately I missed seeing them because of the weather. The museum still looked beautiful from the outside.
I don't understand too much about art, but the galleries at the museum were fascinating nevertheless and I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the museum. I had a light lunch at the museum cafeteria and then headed out to enjoy the lakefront and a walk through the Veteran's Park just outside the museum.
I continued my lakeside walk up north past the yacht club and McKinley beach till I reached Bradford beach. The beach may have been nice in warmer weather but in October it was deserted.
Tired of walking all day, I took a cab to the famous Lakefront Brewery to join one of their hour-long brewery tours. The tour was rather entertaining and included some samples of their different types of beer. They also quizzed the audience during the tour and I won a few tokens for free beers! Post the tour, I had my free beer and ate (fried cheese curds!) at their restaurant and called it a day.
Day 2:
Started off my next day early at the Mitchell Horticultural park. The park consisted of three enclosed domes that each had a different environment for plants to grow in- one had desert plants, one was a warm and humid tropical jungle and the third had a whole lot of flowering plants. I do have an interest in plants, so I ended up spending almost an hour there.
Next was the Harley Davidson Museum. It housed a number of old-fashioned bikes showing how Harley Davidson originated and its history, as well as some neat displays about how their engines work.
Last stop for the day was the Milwaukee Zoo, which, while pleasant, was really aimed more at kids and was nothing exceptional if you've been to good zoos elsewhere. Still, it was a pleasant way to spend the evening.
Day 3
My third day was exploring Milwaukee was actually the Saturday on the next weekend, at Whitnall Park.
I started off at the Wehr Nature Center that had a number of pretty trails through the park. The park was really beutiful in autumn and I had a lovely time walking around the lake, the autumn trees. I spent half the day just leisurely walking around the nature park. I even saw a deer or wo while there.
By later in the afternoon, I headed to the Boerner Botanical Gardens where they had a special of display of various life-sized decorated lanterns in different shapes like dragons, and the teracotta army and a number of different animals. The exhibit is seasonal and called 'China Lights'
I ended the day with dinner at the food stalls at the Boerner Gardens, where they also had some acrobatics shows arranged for entertainment.
